Long Term Disability Insurance

Long-Term Disability insurance is designed to pay a monthly benefit to you in the event you cannot work for an extended period of time because of a covered illness or injury. It is an income protection program that supplies benefits after 180 days of continuous disability. It is provided to supplement industrial disability leave, Social Security disability, retirement system payments, or any other group disability plan payments. 

The CSU automatically provides employer-paid long term disability insurance (LTD) to eligible employees. The effective date is the first day of the calendar month following the date you become eligible.

The level of coverage varies by employee bargaining unit outlined below:

  • Reasonable Accommodation Expense Benefit

Voluntary Long- Term Disability is designed to pay a monthly benefit to you in the event you cannot work for an extended period because of a covered illness or injury. This benefit replaces a portion of your income, helping you meet your financial commitments in a time of need. Individual plans have two payment options, payment after 30 days of disability or payment after 90 days of disability.

Employees may apply for Voluntary Long–Term Disability within 60 days of their hire date with no medical certification required. All benefit eligible employees who are NOT eligible for the employer paid Long-Term Disability may apply. 

Please note: Once enrolled, your expected LTD monthly pay-out will not increase as your salary increases. If you wish to increase your disability payments you can apply online for an increase.
