About Me

Karlyn Griffith is Associate Professor of Art History at Cal Poly Pomona. Her research focuses on the interplay of sacred and secular visual imagery in medieval culture and the reuse of Roman and early medieval materials in medieval architecture. Dr. Griffith has published several studies on late medieval illustrated Apocalypses and recently co-authored The Val-Dieu Apocalypse with Darron Burrows and Nigel Morgan. Her current book project The Innovation and Evolution of Illuminated Apocalypses in Late Medieval France firstly identifies and localizes several currently unknown illustrated Apocalypses made in France in the fourteenth century, and secondly demonstrates new perspectives for understanding the reception of not only Apocalypses but also any illustrated manuscript by considering dynamics of place, the role of language, production practices, and the purpose of visual innovation. Research for this project has been supported by the Mellon Foundation, the Institute for Historical Research in London, the American Philosophical Society, and the Bibliographical Society of the UK.
