Recipients Announced for 2023-24 Provost's Awards for Excellence

Juanita Jellyman, Linchi Kwok and Mary Yu Danico

Professors Juanita Jellyman, Linchi Kwok and Mary Yu Danico have been announced as the 2023-24 recipients of the Provost's Awards for Excellence.

The awards recognize Cal Poly Pomona faculty who have earned distinction in the areas of teaching, scholarly and creative activities, and service. These awards are made possible by a grant from the Kellogg Legacy Project Endowment.

The Provost’s Awards recipients will be recognized at their college’s Commencement ceremonies in May. The Provost’s Awards Symposium is scheduled for Oct. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. More information will be shared in fall semester.

Excellence in Teaching

Juanita JellymanJuanita Jellyman is the associate professor and associate chair of Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science and joined Cal Poly Pomona in 2016.

In the classroom, Jellyman loves teaching physiology by using household items to illustrate complex concepts, and outside the classroom by involving students in research. She is an active member of the American Physiological Society and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society, where she teaches professional development workshops for physiology instructors, providing access to inclusive physiology teaching resources and encouraging best practices in teaching of anatomy and physiology.

Since joining Cal Poly Pomona, Jellyman has secured several grants to support classroom modernization and the development of active learning resources, such as case studies.

 

Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities

Linchi KwokLinchi Kwok is professor of hospitality management in The Collins College of Hospitality Management. Known for his high-impact scholarly and innovative activities in the global hospitality community, His work often appears on the most cited/downloaded list in esteemed hospitality journals, and he has won seven best paper awards at various conferences.

Kwok holds editorial roles in four prestigious journals in hospitality management (International Journal of Hospitality Management, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, and Cornell Hospitality Quarterly). In addition, he frequently shares his research and industry insights on mainstream media outlets such as the Los Angeles TimesNational Geographic and Condé Nast Traveler.

Kwok exemplifies Cal Poly Pomona’s Teacher-Scholar Model by enriching students’ learning experiences through his scholarship. The student teams in his PolyX class have won several awards in an annual global lodging market study competition since 2019.

 Excellence in Service

Mary Kunmi Yu DanicoMary Kunmi Yu Danico is professor of sociology in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences and the director of the Michi and Walter Weglyn Endowed Chair, and Asian American Transnational Research Initiative at Cal Poly Pomona. She has also served as the associate dean of the College of Environmental Design and is the past president of the Association for Asian American Studies.

Under her guidance, Cal Poly Pomona alumni now work as professors, psychologists, therapists and school administrators around the nation. Her commitment to a culture of care impacts the way she mentors her students and colleagues through intentional acts.
