About the Program
We combine classroom learning, hands-on laboratory work and field experiences with industry-standard equipment to explore the Geosciences. Our students engage in research under the guidance of faculty mentors and develop critical problem-solving skills needed to address global challenges such as water resource management, environmental analysis, natural hazard mitigation and sustainable energy development.
The Polytechnic Approach
From the traditional GPS receivers, Brunton compasses, mineral separation equipment, and water flow probes to cutting-edge Ion Chromatography, ground-penetrating radar, seismic refraction, and drone-enhanced LiDAR, learning Geology at CPP involves hands-on use of common industry tools from day one. Through application of theory, fieldwork and lab practice, you will be prepared to tackle environmental and land development issues and well-equipped for a career as a professional geologist or for advanced study in Geosciences.
Career Outcomes
Program Emphasis
Courses
The Geology program offers a comprehensive education in the Geosciences through hands-on learning, faculty-mentored research, and exposure to cutting-edge technology. The B.S. in Geology features three options: Geology, Geophysics/Earth Exploration and Environmental Resources. Each is designed to prepare you for diverse careers in the geosciences. These emphases equip you with global perspectives for problem-solving and leadership roles in an evolving world. Our focus on practical experience and current technology ensures that you gain valuable skills for addressing complex geoscience challenges.

Financial Aid & Scholarships
Ernest Prete, Jr. Geological Sciences Scholarship
The Ernest Prete, Jr. Geological Sciences Scholarship consists of two parts: a $1,000 sum awarded annually to a continuing student; and placement of the recipient’s name on a plaque displayed in the Geological Sciences Department Office. The intention is to recognize individuals with outstanding commitments to the field of Earth Sciences with an emphasis in environmental studies. When funds from earnings on the endowment permit, more than one scholarship may be awarded each year.

Geology Professor Completes 500-Mile Desert Hike to Inspire STEM Students
In a feat possibly not attempted for more than 50 years, Nick Van Buer, associate professor of geology, hiked more than 500 miles across California's Mojave Desert during his sabbatical last spring. Over 35 days starting in January, Van Buer traveled on foot from the Mexican border near Yuma, Arizona to the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Olancha, California. Like the pioneers of old, he baked his own bread to conserve weight and space. His pack of provisions weighed up to 70 pounds. Half of the weight was water and only 10 pounds was food.
