The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $22 million to Cal Poly Pomona in collaboration with University of California, Riverside (UCR) and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to establish and support a BioFoundry for Extreme & Exceptional Fungi, Archaea and Bacteria (ExFAB).
The NSF ExFAB BioFoundry aims to remove research barriers and accelerate the understanding and engineering of extreme microbes for synthetic biology. It focuses on creating innovative platforms and equipment for the discovery, phenotyping, and engineering of these microbes. The ExFAB BioFoundry is designed to advance an internal research agenda centered on bioremediation, biosynthesis, and understanding the fundamental principles governing extreme microorganisms, while making its technologies and tools accessible to external users. New equipment will be acquired and installed over the coming years.
