Fellowships and Faculty Mentorship

Abigail Trujillo

Cal Poly Pomona lies within a rapidly growing high-tech industrial area where the demand for skilled workers with a Bachelors level degree is growing. The aims of this program address the needs of the U.S. and California to produce and retain more domestic STEM professionals. The SPIRES program provides fellowships (paid internships) to work with faculty on projects in the area of the students' major. Projects can be in the following disciples:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemistry & Biochemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Engineering
  • Geological sciences
  • Mathematics & Statistics
  • Physics& Astronomy

Implementation of these career skills is a model that follows Cal Poly Pomona’s philosophy of “Learn by Doing.” The student research fellowships will entail working with a faculty member on a research project that helps the scholars develop both a strong foundation in their field, and a strong analytical & problem-solving skill set. The goal is to build skill sets learned in the computer lab, research laboratory or in the field and, in conjunction with CPP's curricular preparation, produce well-prepared scholars who are ready for practical application in an occupational setting.

The research fellowship pays students $5000/year to work with a faculty member and includes $350-400 in project supplies.
