Cal Poly Pomona National College Health Assessment, Spring 2021

The National College Health Assessment is a nationally recognized research survey conducted by the American College Health Association. The survey collects data regarding students’ health habits, behaviors, and perceptions, and has a number of measures regarding past and present substance use and consequences associated with such use. Cal Poly Pomona administers this survey every other year. *Note – Due to COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all classes and activities were conducted remotely during the 2020-21 academic year and rates of substance use were lower than in previous years. 

Alcohol Use at CPP

  • What percent of students on campus have used alcohol at some point in their lives? 63% (70% in 2020) 
  • What percent of students have used alcohol in the past 3 months? 55% (63% in 2020) 
  • Past 2 weeks – 36% (43% in 2020) 
  • 88% had 4 or fewer drinks the last time they consumed alcohol (83% in 2020)
  • 10% drove after any alcohol (16% in 2020) 

Cannabis Use at CPP

  • Lifetime use – 37% (42% 2020) 
  • Past 3 months use – 22% (28% 2020) 
  • Last 2 weeks use – 12% (17% 2020) 
  • ASSIST scores indicate that 14% of students are at moderate risk for health and other problems due to use 
  • 28% of students who used drove within 6 hours of use (past 30 days) (42% 2020) 

Other Substance Use at CPP

  • Cigarettes – 3% (7% 2020) - 3-month prevalence 
  • E-cigs – 6% (12% 2020) 3-month prevalence 
  • Sedatives – 2% 
  • Cocaine – 1.5%  
  • Prescription stimulants – 5% 
  • Hallucinogens – 8% (5% 2020)
