Campus Safety

Commencement is a special event for everyone involved. We are committed to fostering a campus environment that is safe, welcoming, and respectful of all attendees.

All attendees are expected to comply with University policies (including Time, Place, and Manner Policy), laws, and directions from University officials. Those who do not comply may be asked to leave. Visit the Planning Ahead page for more event information.

Clear Bags Required

Clear bags will be required. They should be made of vinyl or plastic material, must not exceed 12” x 12” x 6” and should not have obscured interior pockets. Exceptions will be made only for:

  • Purses, wallets or bags that are 6” x 6” or smaller
  • Medically necessary items, including diaper bags that accompany infants

All other bags, backpacks, purses and carriers must be returned to the vehicle or left at home.

Prohibited Items

In order to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone, the following items are NOT PERMITTED at the Cal Poly Pomona commencement ceremonies. In addition, University Police have specially trained working dogs at this event. Please DO NOT attempt to pet them for your safety.

  • Aerosol and other pressurized canisters and sprays
  • Alcohol
  • All weapons (including toy and replica guns, bb guns, and airsoft guns). Law enforcement personnel, who are present but not attending in an official capacity, are prohibited from bringing weapons on campus.
  • Any artificial noisemakers (i.e., air horns, cans filled with contents, etc.)
  • Balloons, filled or unfilled
  • Bags larger than 12” x 12” x 6”. Clear bags are required.
  • Banners and signs that are larger than 20" x 20". All signs will be reviewed for content.
  • Beach balls and other inflatable items
  • Bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, and scooters
  • Cigarettes and E-cigarettes (the University is a tobacco and vape-free campus)
  • Confetti cannons
  • Coolers
  • Drones and other unmanned aircraft systems
  • Drugs (Including CA legally possessed marijuana)
  • Fireworks
  • Flammable liquids
  • Gas masks
  • Guns
  • Helmets and face shields
  • Knives
  • Large or oversized umbrellas (must fit in their bag)
  • Laser pointers
  • Lawn furniture
  • Mace, pepper spray, or similar chemical spray
  • Marking pens
  • Masks or costume pieces that conceal identity
  • Megaphones
  • Paint (any type or form)
  • Pets (service animals are allowed)
  • Sticks, signs with sticks, and selfie sticks
  • Stun guns
  • Torches and other open flames
  • Tripods or large photographic equipment
  • Wagons and carts

Police officers and event staff may restrict additional items, at their discretion, even if it is not listed.

Individuals found in possession of the above-mentioned items may be asked to remove the item from the university or dispose of it.

Cal Poly Pomona is not responsible for any lost, damaged or missing items left at the Commencement venue.

Guests who refuse to comply may be subject to arrest, other legal action, or disciplinary action through Student Conduct and Integrity.
