Campus Safety

Commencement is a special event for everyone involved.  As a supportive part of our Cal Poly Pomona Family, please show respect for all in attendance of this landmark experience and take a moment to review the information provided below.


In order to provide a safe and secure environment for all in attendance, the following items are NOT PERMITTED at the Cal Poly Pomona commencement ceremonies. For your safety, items may be added to this list if needed. Furthermore, University police have specially trained working dogs at this event. Please Do Notattempt to pet them for your safety.

  • Aerosol and other pressurized canisters and sprays
  • Alcohol
  • Any weapons (including toy and replica guns, bb guns, and airsoft guns)
  • Any artificial noisemakers (i.e., air horns, cans filled with contents, etc.)
  • Balloons filled with any substance other than air and any non-flammable and non-hazardous gas.
  • Beach balls
  • Bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, and scooters
  • Cigarettes and E-cigarettes (the University is a tobacco and vape-free campus)
  • Coolers
  • Drones and other unmanned aircraft systems
  • Drugs (Including Ca legally possessed marijuana)
  • Gas masks
  • Guns
  • Helmets and face shields
  • Knives
  • Fireworks
  •  Flammable liquids
  •  Large or oversized umbrellas (must fit in their bag)
  • Laser pointers
  • Lawn furniture
  • Mace, pepper spray, or similar chemical spray
  • Marking pens
  • Masks or costume pieces that conceal identity
  • Mega phones
  • Paint (any type or form)
  • Pets (service animals are allowed)
  • Stun guns
  • Torches and other open flames
  • Tripods or Large Photographic Equipment
  • Wagons and carts

    * Law enforcement personnel not present in an official capacity, are prohibited from bringing weapons on campus.

Individuals found in possession of the above-mentioned items may be asked to remove the item from the university or dispose of it.

Guests who refuse to comply may be subject to arrest, other legal action, or disciplinary action through Student Conduct and Integrity.



Please stay in your seat for the duration of the ceremony - be courteous to your fellow graduates and remain seated until the recessional. If you would like to take a photograph of your graduate on stage, please take the photo from your seat. Thereis nota designated area where photos can be taken, donot block the view of others, do not stand on chairs or in the aisles at any time. This is for your safety and the safety of all attendees.

Safety Precautions:

During the ceremony, for safety and accessibility, bags must be placed on a person's lap at all times and cannot be placed on the aisle or on another seat. The University is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Service Animals:

Cal Poly Pomona welcomes service animals. Service animals are working animals trained to perform tasks for the benefit of individuals with a disability such as guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, alerting and protecting people prone to seizures, or other tasks directly related to a disability. Animals whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the American with Disabilities Act.  Please leave pets at home for their safety and comfort as the commencement environment will have large crowds, heat, noise and confusion.  Please note California State Law prohibits leaving an animal inside a confined vehicle.
