Campus Safety

Commencement is a special event for everyone involved.  As a supportive part of our Cal Poly Pomona Family, please show respect for all in attendance of this landmark experience and take a moment to review the information provided below.

Bag Check

For safety reasons, all bags are subject to search. All guests and graduates must go through the Bag Check areas around the Commencement venue. Visit the Commencement website for a list of prohibited items.

Prohibited Items

In order to provide a safe and secure environment for all in attendance, the following items are NOT PERMITTED at the Cal Poly Pomona commencement ceremonies. For your safety, items may be added to this list if needed. Furthermore, University police have specially trained working dogs at this event. Please Do Not attempt to pet them for your safety.

  • Aerosol and other pressurized canisters and sprays
  • Alcohol
  • Any weapons (including toy and replica guns, bb guns, and airsoft guns)
  • Any artificial noisemakers (i.e., air horns, cans filled with contents, etc.)
  • Balloons filled with any substance other than air and any non-flammable and non-hazardous gas
  • Beach balls and other inflatable items
  • Bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, and scooters
  • Cigarettes and E-cigarettes (the University is a tobacco and vape-free campus)
  • Coolers
  • Drones and other unmanned aircraft systems
  • Drugs (Including Ca legally possessed marijuana)
  • Gas masks
  • Guns
  • Helmets and face shields
  • Knives
  • Fireworks
  •  Flammable liquids
  •  Large or oversized umbrellas (must fit in their bag)
  • Laser pointers
  • Lawn furniture
  • Mace, pepper spray, or similar chemical spray
  • Marking pens
  • Masks or costume pieces that conceal identity
  • Mega phones
  • Paint (any type or form)
  • Pets (service animals are allowed)
  • Stun guns
  • Torches and other open flames
  • Tripods or Large Photographic Equipment
  • Wagons and carts
  • Sticks, signs with sticks and selfie sticks
  • Banners and signs that are larger than 20" x 20" - all signs will be reviewed for content.

Law enforcement personnel not present in an official capacity, are prohibited from bringing weapons on campus.

Individuals found in possession of the above-mentioned items may be asked to remove the item from the university or dispose of it.

Guests who refuse to comply may be subject to arrest, other legal action, or disciplinary action through Student Conduct and Integrity.
