About Me

David J. DeVore is a historian of the pre-modern Mediterranean region, particularly the ancient Greeks and Romans. He grew up in Santa Barbara, earned his doctorate in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology at Berkeley, and taught in the Classics department at Ball State University in Indiana before returning to southern California to teach at Cal Poly. Prof. DeVore is primarily an intellectual and social historian, with research interests centering on ancient Greek historical writing and early Christian communities. He has taught subjects from the beginnings of permanent cities in Mesopotamia to the musical Hamilton but at Cal Poly enjoys teaching the ancient Mediterranean and medieval Europe, Historical Methods, and Senior Thesis. When not teaching he enjoys reading, the latest Netflix series, bicycling, gardening, and spending time with his family.
