About Me

Dr. Joshua Truett is an artist-scholar whose work explores performance as resistance, resilience, and community formation. Based on ethnographic research in Oaxaca, Mexico, Dr. Truett’s work explores festivals in indigenous and mestizo (mixed race/ethnicity) communities in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the Oaxacan diaspora, and the US Southwest. Using decolonial methodologies from queer, trans, and Indigenous studies, he investigates the activism performed by muxe organizations: a non-binary gender and non-normative sexual identity in the Isthmus Zapotec culture. Other research-artistic interests include devising, dramaturgy, and dis/ability studies. Josh is also a producer, writer, and performer who works across theatre, film, and new media with specializations in physical and experimental theatre. A García-Robles Fulbright recipient and a University Fellow (Ph.D.) at The Ohio State University, he has received numerous grants and awards to support his work on campus and in the community.
