Lawrence B Chan

Lawrence B Chan, PhD is a Research Scientist Supervisor (Section Chief, Epidemiology and Data Analytics Unit) in the Regional Public Health Office at the CA Dept of Public Health. An AI and Data Strategy Leader, Lawrence oversees a team of epidemiologists and researchers supporting over 39 million CA residents and all 61 local health jurisdictions, in addition to stewardship of over $200 million in annual Future of Public Health fund allocation. Lawrence also provides analytics and data modernization leadership assisting in several technical statewide committees, including at the CalHHS level, advancing data governance, interoperability, and digital transformation. His experience has informed design and operationalization of large-scale epidemiologic systems, dashboards, and AI-enabled analytics to drive population level impact. Previous to his current position, he has held a range of roles in government, population health, management consulting, and academia.

A practitioner-scholar, Dr. Chan has published over a dozen peer-reviewed and theoretical journal articles in the areas of public and behavioral health, leadership, and management. In addition to his role at Cal Poly Pomona, he is also currently an industry mentor / faculty member / executive education program architect at several universities in Southern California including UCLA, UC Irvine, Chapman University, and Vanguard University, and serves as a contributing editor for several peer-reviewed journal outlets including the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
