Fungal Biology, 4 credits, Spring Term

This is a lab and lecture class that leads students through the diversity of Kingdom Fungi with a variety of hands-on activities and field trips, including instruction in how to collect, culture, and identify a range of fungi, and sampling a number of different foods produced with fungi. We also discuss the many ways fungi impact human life, from toxic species, to pharmaceutical derivatives, to historical usage in religious ceremonies, and the function of fungi in the human microbiome.

Fungal Field Biology, 1 credit, Fall Term

This is a one credit lab class that focuses on the collection and identification of mushroom-forming fungi in the local area. As a field-based class, we take several field trips to local areas for students to learn how to collect fungi. We then bring these specimens back to the lab where students use microscopy, field guides, and dichotomous keys to identify their specimens. The class also includes lectures to familiarize students with the diversity and ecological importance of these species.

Basic Microbiology, BIO 2060, 3 credits

Microbes are everywhere (including in and on your body at this moment) and impact your daily life in a myriad of ways! Basic Microbiology is a course to introduce you to the magical world of microscopic life. You will become familiar with the biology and diversity of microorganisms, the microbes in the environment, and the causes and control of infectious diseases. Microbiology covers elements of cell biology, genetics, immunology, and biochemistry by learning how single cells work. Comprehension of this subject will equip you with necessary knowledge and skills for advanced courses in microbiology.
