She is a nationally recognized expert in the field of gender studies. Her textbook, Women Artists in History: From Antiquity to the Present first appeared in 1985 and most recently has been published in a 4th edition. This volume reprints a variety of primary source documents with annotations and introductions, relevant to women artists active from 1600 to the present. Her most recent project is a new sourcebook of autobiographical texts, including letters, journal entries and retrospective life narratives, of women artists, from the 19th century to the contemporary era. This book, In Her Own Words, is currently in production. In 2007, Dr. Slatkin served as a reader for the AP Art History exam. She has been teaching at Cal Poly since 1998. She most frequently teaches Art 110 and Env 115, in the winter quarter. She also teaches Art 305: Gender and Art usually in the spring quarter. She has taught all three sections of the western art history survey, 212, 213 and 214 and other courses, on an as needed basis.
