Subject Tutoring

Subject Tutoring is a program in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). We offer one-on-one and small group tutoring for courses in math, science, engineering, business, music, social sciences, and more (courses other than reading and writing). See below for the semester's comprehensive list of available courses. We also offer a tutor-guided study hall service, language learning sessions, and course-specific workshops. Subject Tutoring services are available on an appointment or drop-in basis beginning Week 2 of the semester through Finals Week.

For tips on time management, study habits, note-taking, and test-taking, students can visit StudentLingo. These interactive videos further students' academic skills and learning strategy development.

Certification

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an international tutoring organization. The LRC's CRLA certification process sets an internationally accepted standard of tutor training for the purpose of providing tutors with skills, recognition, and positive reinforcement for successful work. The LRC tutoring services are free to all Cal Poly Pomona undergraduate and graduate students. Appointment, online, and drop-in tutoring are available beginning Week 2 of the semester through Finals Week.

Make the Most of Your Tutoring Session

Tutoring reinforces independent learning. Tutors do not teach class material or do their tutee's homework. To ensure your tutoring session is effective and productive, please follow these guidelines:

  • attempt homework problems before attending tutoring;
  • attend the session prepared with specific questions or problems to be addressed;
  • arrive to the tutoring session with all necessary materials (lecture notes, textbook, syllabus, writing assignment prompt);
  • expect to be actively involved in working out problems and discussing class material; and,
  • ask for clarification on anything that does not make sense or on concepts that were covered quickly.

Study With Others

Though we strive to offer tutoring in all courses and at convenient times for students, we recognize that this isn't always possible. We encourage students to participate in CPP Connect's Study Buddies program. Through this app, students are able to create and/or join study groups in their courses.
