LRC Prospective Tutors

The LRC Tutoring Programs are certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), an international tutoring organization. The LRC's CRLA certification process sets an internationally accepted standard of tutor training for the purpose of providing tutors with skills, recognition, and positive reinforcement for their successful work. Currently, the LRC offers two levels of training for tutors, CRLA Level 1 and Level 2.

Academic Skills Tutoring

  • Learning Strategists (Academic Skills tutors) are chosen for their ability to help students develop the skills necessary to be successful at CPP in topics like, time management, test-taking skills and test anxiety, note-taking, and professional communication.
  • Learning Strategists must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and higher.
  • Selection and training of Learning Strategists are an important part of the program.
  • Applicants must submit a tutor application, a CPP student employment application, recommendations, and unofficial transcripts to Handshake. Detailed instructions are provided on Handshake.

Subject Tutoring

  • Subject and Embedded Tutors are chosen for their ability to communicate effectively and their desire to help, as well as promptness, dependability, and command of the subject matter.
  • Tutors must have earned a "B" grade or higher in the courses tutored or embedded in.
  • Tutors who do Embedded Tutoring sit in class modeling behavior of a successful student: take notes, pay attention, engage with the content, participate in class in collaboration with the instructor, and assist facilitation of classroom activities.
  • Outside of class, embedded tutors hold group tutoring time specifically for students in that class and are in frequent communication with the instructor for guidance.
  • Selection and training of tutors is an important part of the program.
  • Applicants must submit a tutor application, a CPP student employment application, resumé, recommendations, and unofficial transcripts to Handshake. Detailed instructions are provided on Handshake.

Supplemental Instruction

  • Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders are chosen for their ability to demonstrate leadership skills, responsible for preparing and conducting their own facilitated study sessions outside of the classroom, and be a model student within the class during lectures.
  • SI leaders must have taken the course for which they wish to be an SI leader.
  • SI leaders must have received a "B" grade or higher in the subject they would like to facilitate in with an overall GPA of 3.0 and higher.
  • SI leaders attend all class lectures, take notes, and act as models to those currently taking the course.
  • Applicants must submit a Supplemental Instruction Leader application, a CPP student employment application, recommendations, and unofficial transcripts to Handshake. Detailed instructions are provided on Handshake.

Writing Center

  • Tutors are chosen for their ability to demonstrate good writing skills and basic knowledge of the conventions of formal writing.
  • Tutors must be successful students (unofficial transcripts required) and have an overall GPA of 3.0 and higher.
  • During the recruitment process, each applicant is asked to respond to a sample of student writing and describe how they would work with that student. There is no one right way to respond--the important thing is to have some insight into how to interact with a struggling writer.
  • Applicants must complete a multiple choice "proofreading" test and submit a tutor application with faculty recommendations and a CPP student employment application to Handshake.
