The Biological Sciences Department is seeking students who are interested in being Biology Learning Assistants (Bio-LAs). We thank the College of Science for their generous support of the program. 

Bio-LAs will work with Dr. Janel Ortiz and will likely support students completing the following courses:

  • Foundations Series (Bio 1210, 1220) 
  • Non-Majors Biology (Bio 1110) 
  • Basic Biology (Non-Majors, focus on science majors), (Bio 1150) 
  • Microbiology (Bio 2060) 
  • Human Physiology (Bio 2350) 
  • Additional non-majors courses 
  • Selected upper-division courses 

Bio-LAs will help facilitate student learning in virtual and/or in-person classrooms and serve as virtual and/or in-person tutors depending on the modality offered by the course the LA is assigned to.

The Learning Assistant Program is dedicated to helping biology students succeed and feel like they belong in their courses. In addition, the program aims to recruit and advise future middle and high school biology teachers.  

LA Benefits:  
  • Gain experience with teaching and tutoring strategies 
  • Significantly reinforce your knowledge of biology  
  • Act as a mentor to newer biology students  
  • Learning Assistants are paid! ($18.00/ hour. Up to $1,620 per semester.)
Biology LA Responsibilities: 
  • Assist and help design in-class activities during lectures as needed by Biology faculty 
  • Help students in biology classes with homework and tutoring 
  • Attend preparation sessions each week with your assigned faculty 
Requirements:
  • Must be a Biology major
  • Available 6 hours per week
  • Need to have completed the Foundations of Biology series and earned at least a B+ in each course.
  • Need to have completed the course you plan to assist as a Bio LA and earned at least a B+
  • Need to be able to attend the lectures or lab (as decided in consultation with your faculty) for your course
  • Need to attend CPP Connect and tutoring training workshops
  • Preference will be given to applicants who
    • have sophomore or junior standing,
    • are majors in Biology, Environmental Biology, or Biotechnology, and
    • express an interest in pursuing teaching science at the K-12 level as a career.
