The W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center hosted 48 children in three, week-long horse camps this summer.

The horse camps were part of the College of Science’s Discovery Camps, which offer children instruction in computers, robotics, science, arts and crafts, leaderships and entrepreneurship.

The children learned how to groom and feed the center’s Arabian horses, how to ride them, and equine nutrition and anatomy. In addition, the children are required to perform chores like on a farm, such as cleaning tack, and boarding and maintaining the stables.

Sydnie DiLeo, 13, had never been to the horse center. Her parents signed her up for the camp even though the family lives all the way out in Rialto.

“I’ve wanted a horse all my life,” she says. “I’m pretty sure they thought it would be a great experience for me.”

The best part of the camp is riding the horses, of course, but DiLeo didn’t mind having to clean the stalls and the other chores the children had to do.

“It’s not that bad actually,” she says. “It’s pretty easy and fast working in groups.”

The horse camps, which are open for children ages 10 to 16, are very popular and usually sell out early.
