Mehrdad Koohikamali, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of CIS and Faculty Fellow of Spatial Intelligence

Mehrdad Koohikamali, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at Cal Poly Pomona. His research focuses on human-centric AI and spatial intelligence, including generative AI literacy, human-in-the-loop geospatial AI, and privacy and ethics on social media. His work has appeared in the Journal of Business Ethics, Decision Support Systems, and Computers in Human Behavior. He received the College's 2025 Jagdish N. Sheth Award for Scholarly Excellence.

Before academia, he worked as a GIS coordinator and spatial data scientist in the renewable energy sector. He teaches courses in business intelligence, data mining, and location analytics. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of North Texas and M.Sc. degrees in GIS from the University of North Texas and the University of Tehran.

2026–2027 Singelyn Center Project

Spatial Intelligence for Business combines GIS with large language models to turn geographic data into plain-language business decisions. A five-student team tackles three questions across Southern California: where to locate, which markets are underserved, and how to structure territories.
