Developer Selected for Lanterman Project

August 26, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

Over the past several months the university has been engaged in a selection process for a master development partner for the 300-acre property near Cal Poly Pomona’s campus, formerly known as the Lanterman Development Center. I am pleased to announce that the university has selected the team of Edgewood Realty Partners & Greystar as the master developer that will partner with us to revitalize the site as a thriving live, learn, work, and play community. This is an important milestone in advancing our vision for Lanterman, in supporting our university mission and values and in contributing to the economic and social vitality of the surrounding communities and region.

The university’s selection of this development team is the result of a process that began in January 2021 with the issuing of an open Request for Proposals. Cal Poly Pomona sought experienced development teams with a strong understanding of, and appreciation for, the university’s mission and vision to develop the property in a manner that will provide benefits to the campus and the surrounding communities. The co-development team of Edgewood Realty Partners & Greystar has a proven track record of effective collaboration with the CSU system and successful completion of complex mixed-use projects.

We will continue to work closely with the California State University Office of the Chancellor to execute an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement (ENA) with the master developer by the end of the calendar year. The master developer will then be able to begin work in earnest to perform the necessary due diligence, conduct stakeholder meetings and prepare a development plan and guidelines intended for completion in March 2023. Continuing to work closely with the Chancellor’s Office staff, we will then commence preparation of the environmental impact report and transaction documents, intended for submission to the Board of Trustees for approval in June 2024.

The university will seek input from the community as we re-imagine the Lanterman property’s transformation into a vital contributor to the university and the region and will continue to provide updates along the way.

I would like to thank the members of the Lanterman Selection Advisory Committee, whose contributions have been essential to our making this decision and include campus stakeholders and expert advisors:

  • Benjamin F. Quillian, Ph.D., Special Advisor to the President
  • Roberta Achtenberg, Advisor to the President
  • Ysabel Trinidad, Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer
  • Sadiq Shah, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for Research and Economic Development (retired)
  • Anthony Orlando, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Finance, Real Estate and Law, College of Business Administration (appointed by the Academic Senate)
  • Project Management Advisors, Inc.

I also extend special thanks to Ben and Ysabel, who will continue to provide ongoing leadership for the Lanterman development project moving forward and will assure opportunities for campus engagement in the activities to follow in partnership with Edgewood Realty Partners & Greystar.
