Future Plans for John McGuthry, Vice President for Information Technology

August 20, 2026

Dear Bronco Community,

After more than 15 years of dedicated service to Cal Poly Pomona, John McGuthry, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO), has shared with me his intention to retire at the end of December 2026.

John has provided thoughtful and steady guidance throughout his tenure, helping to build the technology infrastructure, services, and resources that support our students, faculty, and staff. In his role overseeing Information Technology at Cal Poly Pomona, he has advanced important initiatives and further strengthened our technology foundation, including:

  • Establishing technology governance to promote collaborative, partnership-based decision-making across the University;

  • Developing our campus data warehouse and dashboard reporting initiative to strengthen data-informed planning and decision-making.

  • Guiding enhancements to our student-run Security Operations Center (SOC) and Student-Run Data Center, creating valuable opportunities for hands-on student learning and professional development.

  • Connecting our campus community with emerging technologies and career opportunities through programs like the Artificial Intelligence Fair and Cyber Security Fair that strengthen collaborations with sponsors, faculty, and students.

  • Leading technology planning and coordination to support the University's 2018 transition from quarters to semesters.

  • Directing technology planning to sustain teaching, learning, and University operations during the shift to remote work and instruction throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Guiding the implementation of our campus high-performance computing environment to support advanced research and computing needs.

These accomplishments reflect John's deep commitment to ensuring our technology resources meet the evolving needs of the University while creating opportunities for student learning, collaboration, and innovation.

We will announce a date later this year to recognize and celebrate John's career and contributions with the campus community. In the coming weeks, we will also share additional information about interim leadership for the division and plans for a formal search for his successor.

Please join me in expressing our deep appreciation to John for his many years of dedicated service and for the expertise, care, and commitment he has given to Cal Poly Pomona and our students. His contributions have strengthened our university and will continue to benefit the Bronco community for years to come.

John, we are grateful for all you have done for Cal Poly Pomona and wish you every happiness and success as you begin this next chapter.

Warmly,

Vanya Quiñones, Ph. D.
President
