Seeing how unequal access to technology can influence a student’s future sparked Jairon Caicedo’s passion for computer science and its potential to create opportunity. Born in Ecuador, he attended a school with very few computers and no internet access. After moving to the United States, he learned English and technology at the same time, a challenge that became a source of motivation and purpose. Jairon is preparing for a career in protecting systems, analyzing risks and helping organizations keep information safe. Beyond the classroom, he is active in his church, enjoys music and playing guitar, plays video games and explores new technology. Jairon’s role models include his family and mentors Molly Morin and Gisela Spieler from Rio Hondo College. Their encouragement helped him believe in his potential, especially when he questioned whether he belonged in computer science. He has learned to advocate for himself and find resources, and he hopes to do the same for others. Jairon plans to become a cybersecurity professional and mentor students from underrepresented backgrounds.
