Courses

Cal Poly Pomona's General Chemistry option in the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry offers the most flexible curriculum among the three Bachelor of Science options, allowing students to tailor their studies to fit their individual career goals. This option is particularly suitable for students who require a broad-based education in chemistry while incorporating interdisciplinary elements. Up to 12 elective units can be chosen from outside the chemistry department, enabling students to explore other fields of interest and integrate their chemistry knowledge with diverse disciplines. This flexibility supports various career paths, whether in industry, government, or graduate studies. The General Chemistry degree is also accessible to students transferring with an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Chemistry, allowing them to complete their degree in just 60 semester units. This option is ideal for students seeking a customizable education that aligns with their specific professional aspirations.

Research in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department

The Chemistry and Biochemistry department has several areas of research, and all students have an opportunity to conduct research with a faculty member. From exploring the chemistry of our solar system to discovering novel methods to combat climate change, students can earn course credit through research while also building resumes.

The Cooperative Education Program

Senior Project, Independent Research and the Cooperative Education Program

In addition to the three options for the Chemistry degree, students also have the opportunity to participate in the University’s Cooperative Education Program.  The Co-op program allows students to earn credit and be paid for approved work experience in a sponsoring company.   In many cases, students have gained employment in a company where they participated in a Co-op Internship.  It’s a great way to get work experience that you can list on your resume.
