Sex Differences in Walking-Related Joint Mobility After Prolonged Sitting

Motor Neuroscience Laboratory research poster with Introduction, Purpose, Methods, and Conclusions.

Background and Purpose

Prolonged sitting is a highly prevalent behavior and a well-established risk factorf or musculoskeletal impairments and altered gait mechanics. Although biological sex differences (e.g.,joint flexibility, muscle massdistribution) are known to influencemovement, it remains unclear how they affect kinematic adaptations following a sedentary period. Our lab aims to investigate whether prolonged sitting induces sex-specific alterations in lower-extremity joint mobility and movement strategies during walking.

OpenCap

With this project, students use the open source software OpenCap to measure and analyze the movements of subjects. OpenCap is a software that allows students to look at human kinematics without markers or specialized cameras. Using the data students are able to compare the joint mobility at various points between the two groups.
