Program Overview

  • Levels 1-6 Beginner to Advanced 
  • Placement test which evaluates listening, grammar, reading, and vocabulary
  • Placement test writing test
  • 16-week courses offered in Spring and Fall, and a 8-week course for Summer (see Dates & Fees
  • Core classes are Reading/Writing/Grammar and Listening/Speaking 
  • Levels 1-6 study 20 hours a week 
  • Students at Advanced level may be eligible to take combo of university/ELI classes

  • Expand vocabulary
  • Achieve fluency in basic conversational English
  • Expand listening skills through a variety of activities
  • Develop and practice basic academic skills that help students learn more effectively
  • Read and follow dialogues and directions
  • Write a loosely organized paragraphs with legible handwriting
  • Edit for capitalization, sentence punctuation, and correct spelling
  • Write simple sentences about past, present, and future using correct verb forms
  • Form and answer “why” and “yes/no” questions

To receive a Level 1 Certificate, you must have:

  • iTEP Score: 1 or higher
  • LSR Class Grade: 70% or higher
  • WG Class Grade: 70 % or higher

  • Practice and become comfortable with a variety of reading styles
  • Expand practical and academic vocabulary
  • Practice and become comfortable speaking in front of others in a variety of manners and under various circumstances
  • Expand listening skills through a variety of modes
  • Write simple, compound, and complex sentences
  • Write, organize, and develop academic paragraphs
  • Locate errors in writing and revise paragraphs
  • Use appropriate verb tenses
  • Understand the parts of speech

To receive a Level 2 Certificate, you must have:

  • iTEP Score: 1.5 or higher
  • LSR Class Grade: 70% or higher
  • WG Class Grade: 70 % or higher

  • Develop listening and speaking skills at an intermediate level through both classroom tasks and interaction with English speakers outside the classroom
  • Use formal presentation skills suitable for an academic setting
  • Improve reading comprehension and speed through reading strategies and personal and timed reading
  • Increase both general and academic vocabulary
  • Raise note taking awareness
  • Compose simple, compound, and complex sentences
  • Compose five paragraph essays using generating strategies on a variety of topics using adequate support
  • Identify writing errors and revise for clarity and accuracy
  • Control grammatical and mechanical features in their writing
  • Make use of adjective and adverb clauses and phrases
  • Compose paragraphs and essays under time constraints

To receive a Level 3 Certificate, you must have:

  • iTEP Score: 2.5 or higher
  • LSR Class Grade: 70% or higher
  • WG Class Grade: 70 % or higher

  • Utilize vocabulary building skills including learning word prefixes, suffixes, and roots
  • Participate in academic forms of public speaking and debate
  • Identify and utilize over 150 new academic words
  • Identify social nuances of the English language and modify appropriately
  • Take notes from various mediums and apply such skills to relevant course material
  • Write formal college-level essays
  • Communicate clearly through the use of appropriate grammar and sentence structure
  • Develop the ability to use direct quotes, paraphrase, and summarize information
  • Extend reading and written vocabulary
  • Develop reading comprehension and fluency through timed, extensive, and intensive reading

To receive a Level 4 Certificate, you must have:

  • iTEP Score: 3 or higher
  • LS Class Grade: 70% or higher

RW Class Grade: 70 % or higher

  • Understand academic lectures, take complete and effective notes for review, and ask for clarification during lectures where appropriate
  • Develop the ability to summarize and paraphrase information, synthesize information from a variety of sources into a comprehensible whole, and present this through informal/formal discussion in a logical manner
  • Present research in an academic manner
  • Develop question-asking skills in order to seek clarification during various classroom activities, actively and confidently take part in class discussions and problem solving assignments, and present oral reports based on both short readings and comprehensive research
  • Building and retaining vocabulary in written and spoken English in a variety of settings
  • Acquire rhetorical forms that are essential to an effective American essay
  • Communicate clearly through the use of appropriate grammar and sentence structure
  • Extend reading and written vocabulary
  • Develop reading comprehension of different types of writing from a variety of sources
  • Develop the ability to summarize and paraphrase information, to synthesize information from a variety of sources, and to write both brief and extensive essay responses

To receive a Level 5 Certificate, you must have:

  • Understand complex academic and field-specific lectures, take complete and effective notes for review, and ask for clarification during lectures where appropriate
  • Develop the ability to incorporate and synthesize content of academic listening material into formal presentations
  • Present research on professional, academic, field-specific and/or controversial topics with effective references to outside sources
  • Demonstrate question-asking skills in order to seek clarification during various classroom activities, actively and confidently take part in class discussions and problem solving assignments, and present oral reports based on both short readings and comprehensive research
  • Utilize academic and field-specific vocabulary to express precise meaning
  • Master rhetorical strategies that are essential to composing research-based academic essays and reports
  • Further refine the ability to summarize and synthesize information from journal articles and other accepted academic sources
  • Communicate clearly through the use of appropriate grammar and sentence structure
  • Construct a literature review of a discipline specific topic.
  • Correctly utilize field specific vocabulary.
  • Apply research to analyze and offer suggestions to solve field specific problems.
  • Critique research by evaluating research methods, analyzing results, and conducting follow-up research.
