Community-Engaged Learning and Service-Learning

About

Service-learning is an academic course where a service project or service experience is part of the overall grade. In the spirit of learning by doing, Cal Poly Pomona faculty, staff and students actively support and engage in service-learning activities that build meaningful and sustainable community partnerships.

What is Service-Learning?

Service-learning gives students structured opportunities to learn, develop and reflect through community involvement that meets shared student, faculty and community partner needs. Assessments and reflection connect course objectives with community issues, enriching academic learning and building civic competence and engagement.

How can faculty benefit from a service-learning course?

Service-learning integrates teaching and research to generate scholarship on teaching (teacher-scholar). In addition, it fosters an environment that engages and motivates students by providing an environment that allows them to demonstrate their application of academic material. Lastly, it promotes awareness of community involvement among faculty.

How can faculty create or revise a service-learning course?

For assistance in creating or revising a service-learning course, please reach out to the Center for Community Engagement by emailing cce@cpp.edu, or by calling (909)869-4269.

Where can faculty find a community partner to work with?

To find an official list of community partners, please visit Cal Poly Pomona's internship database, BroncoSERV. However, if you have a new community partner you would like to work with, please email cce@cpp.edu.
