Academic Policies

Academic Policies provide information as to what students must complete to obtain their degree Graduation Requirements:

1. 120 units are required to graduate
   • 80 units of lower division (LD) which are 1000 and 2000 level courses and 40 units of upper division (UD) which are 3000 and 4000 level courses.
   • 48 units of GE courses totoal in which 9 will be UD
   • 72 units of ECS courses total in which 30 will be UD courses (need 1 more additional UD to meet the total 40 units)
2. American Cultural Perspectives Requirement- - The American Cultural Perspective Requirment is a graduation requirment.
   • HS 2202 GE Area D1 counts as American history and government and American Cultural Perspectives requirement
3. Transfer
   • You can only transfer up to 70 units You are required to take 50 units at CPP.
   • If you take more than 70 units at a community college or decide to continue to take coursework at a community college to make progress, the transfer coursework will satisfy curriculum course requirements, however, the units will be adjusted.

Undergraduate students at CPP must satisfy the GE 48 semester units, including 9 units of upper division synthesis courses.

1. If you have your AA degree you only need 3 upper division courses: B5, C3, D4 you can choose any GE courses under these GE areas
2. Planning on being a K-12 teacher. It is recommended to take the following upper division courses that help with the CSET exam
   • B5: GSC 3500
   • C3: HST 3370
   • D4: GEO 3510

*A grade of C or better is required for all your major ECS courses.

All students take the core 15 ECS courses that are focused on providing students with the competencies to work with young children and families using and anti-racist framework that values all children and families. ECS 2100/A is a core course all students will take, in this course students will be placed in an approved ELC settings in which 60 hours will be completed with children and families under the supervision of a mentor teacher and faculty member.

There are 6 options in the ECS department. The option you choose (or have chosen) depends on your career path choice. For each option you will find the following link that will help you understand the courses you are required to take.

• Road Map: Helps you identify when to take courses, which semester the course is offered (courses are not offered every semester), and the required pre-requisites (most courses have pre-requisites so that you have the knowledge and skills that help you with the next course). Child Development Permit

All state and government early learning programs require early childhood teachers to hold a child development permit (some private early learning programs may require it as well). You can get your permit as soon as you complete 6 units in ECS (this qualifies you for an Assistant Permit). After you complete your BA in ECS you can apply for you Child Development Site Supervisor Permit.

Cal Poly Pomona Teacher Credential

For students seeking to be an elementary teacher, Cal Poly Pomona has a multiple subject teacher credential.
