Philharmonic Orchestra & Opus Strings Ensemble Auditions
Overview
Auditions for the Cal Poly Pomona Philharmonic Orchestra and Opus String Ensemble are open to qualified students interested in performing traditional and contemporary orchestral music.
Participation is by audition only, and students are expected to demonstrate strong musicianship, preparation, and commitment to ensemble excellence.
Required First Step
Interest Form
All prospective members must complete the CPP Philharmonic Orchestra Interest Form prior to auditioning. This form helps the faculty coordinate auditions, placement, and ensemble communication.
Students are encouraged to submit the form as early as possible to ensure timely audition scheduling and follow-up.
Philharmonic Audition Requirements
Audition requirements vary by instrument. Select your instrument below to see what is required of you. You should select repertoire that highlights tone quality, technique, musicality, and stylistic awareness.
- 2-octave major scales: D, E flat, A, and 3-OCTAVE G major
- A solo or etude of your choice that demonstrates what you can do on the instrument

- 2-octave major scales: D, E flat, G (Add 3-Octave C if you have it)
- A solo or etude of your choice that demonstrates what you can do on the instrument

- 3-octave C major scale; 2-octave G and E flat major
- A solo or etude of your choice that demonstrates what you can do on the instrument

- 2-octave F, G, and B flat major scales
- A solo or etude of your choice that demonstrates what you can do on the instrument

- 4-octave F and A flat major scales, and 4-octave E melodic minor scale
- Any solo or etude in 3/4, 12/8, or 6/8 time that shows what you can do on the instrument
- Winds and percussion audition materials and scheduling will match the CPP Bands audition information, and you will complete your audition concurrently
- (I.e., a student already auditioning for the wind bands does not need to schedule a second audition slot).

- Winds may select either Option 1 or Option 2 if not a music major.
- Winds and percussion audition materials and scheduling will match the CPP Bands audition information, and you will complete your audition concurrently
