This year’s Cavin Competition solicited proposals for the Redwood National Park Artist In Residence
Program in Crescent City California which gives artists the opportunity to stay in a National Park while pursuing their work.
The project was to create a new 14,000 square foot purpose-built Artist In Residence facility to allow participants in the program to experience the unique context and beauty of the redwood forest. Proposals were judged on their:
A careful approach to providing a full spectrum of private, common, and public spaces for the artist to live and work in, and for the Crescent City community to benefit from.
The design of outdoor spaces for program artists, employees of the adjacent Redwood Park Headquarters building, as well as its neighbors and visitors.
A clear strategy for the implementation of sustainable strategies, techniques, and technologies.
A thoughtful response to the increased risk of tsunamis in Crescent City.
