A Message to Our Campus Community Regarding César Chávez
March 18, 2026
Dear Campus Community,
Cal Poly Pomona is deeply troubled by recent allegations that have surfaced concerning César E. Chávez. Understandably, this moment has evoked a wide range of emotions within our campus community, including grief, trauma, confusion, anger and, for some, a profound sense of betrayal.
As a significant historical figure, his legacy is honored in various ways across the California State University system, including through statues, murals and building names.
We recognize the presence and significance of the César E. Chávez Center for Higher Education (CECCHE) at Cal Poly Pomona, established in 1995 as a reflection of the university’s commitment to student belonging, purpose, academic success and thriving for all. We also understand that this moment may raise important and deeply felt questions about how that legacy is represented on our campus today.
In the spirit of community care and shared responsibility, we will engage students, faculty and staff in a thoughtful process to gather input and perspectives that will help inform next steps regarding the future of the center’s name. This process will be grounded in reflection, transparency, and a genuine commitment to listening, ensuring that any decisions regarding the center’s name are shaped by the voices, experiences and values of our campus community.
