College Celebrates Classes of 2020, 2021

The Huntley College of Agriculture celebrated two years’ worth of graduating students at special drive-in Commencement ceremonies at the Fairplex.

The Classes of 2020 and 2021 were honored in separate ceremonies on May 20.

Traditionally, the college celebrates Commencement at the University Quad on the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

But the COVID-19 pandemic forced the university to postpone the 2020 Commencement until this year and to change the event to a drive-in format, with reduced spectator capacity.

When the drive-in events were announced in March, Los Angeles County and Fairplex protocols did not allow for graduates to exit their vehicles.

However, the improving pandemic situation – with infections decreasing and vaccinations increasing – allowed university officials to announce in April that graduates could exit their cars and walk across the stage.

During the week of Commencement, the graduating students and their families received more good news when the university announced it would allow guests to sit outside their cars with face coverings, as long as they didn't congregate with other groups. Graduates were also allowed to remove their mask for a photo op.

Karen Ross, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, was the guest speaker for the ceremonies, sharing a pre-recorded video message.

In addition, Julian A. McPhee Outstanding Student Scholar Award recipients – given to the valedictorians of each class – also gave pre-recorded video speeches.

Courtney Welch was the McPhee Scholar for the Class of 2020. A Menifee native, Welch earned her bachelor’s degree in animal science and works as an animal care technician at the city of Moreno Valley animal shelter.

Breanne Carey was the McPhee Scholar for the Class of 2021. From Brea, Carey also graduated in animal science and will attend the University of Edinburgh’s Royal School of Veterinary Studies.

The college also recognized Professor Joanne Sohn, who was named the recipients of the university’s 2020-21 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
