Join us to learn more about the new Turnitin LTI 1.3 integration in Canvas. We will demonstrate how to create Turnitin assignments and set up PeerMark activities, compare grading in Canvas SpeedGrader with grading in Turnitin, and explore the new Multipart Assignment feature. We will also compare the LTI 1.3 integration with the Canvas Plagiarism Framework to help you determine which option best suits your assignments.

Description:
Transparent assignments are a way to structure your assignments to make them clear and specific. Transparent assignments help students understand why they are completing an assignment, how it relates to their goals, what tasks to complete and how they will be assessed. Making your assignments transparent is helpful for students who may not be aware of the ‘hidden curriculum.’ We will also cover creating Assignments in Canvas.

In this workshop, we will explore essential settings and question types, and demonstrate how Question Banks can help instructors organize, reuse, and randomize questions. In this final workshop in the Canvas in Practice series, instructors will explore the finer points of calculating final grades in Canvas. Topics will include customizing the Grades page; configuring course- and Gradebook-level settings; choosing between points-based and weighted grading; applying automatic policies for missing and late submissions; incorporating extra credit; and addressing other common grading challenges.

Description:
Generative AI is rapidly changing education, but effective learning still depends on productive self-regulated learning (SRL). This workshop explores how faculty can leverage AI to strengthen—rather than replace—students' planning, monitoring, strategy use, and reflection. This session covers a four-phase model of self-regulated learning (SRL) and provides examples at each phase. We will explore how metacognitive strategies can be integrated into genAI use, and you will be provided with sample genAI prompts to encourage the use of SRL with students.

Please note this is not a technical workshop on how to create custom GPTs or AI tools.

Presenters will share practical examples of how they are using AI to transform the ways students learn, engage with course material, and demonstrate their understanding. This session will offer participants new ideas and adaptable approaches for thoughtfully incorporating AI into their own teaching.

We invite you to register for our new workshop, ChatGPT Skills for Teaching and Learning on November 5, which introduces the latest tools and approaches for using ChatGPT in teaching and learning.

Explore how you can use ChatGPT Skills to support teaching, learning, and productivity. ChatGPT Skills are reusable, shareable workflows that help ChatGPT perform specific tasks more consistently and are part of ChatGPT Plugins. Similar to ChatGPT's retired Custom GPTs, Skills can include instructions, examples, and supporting resources to guide ChatGPT's responses and actions. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to design and create ChatGPT skills tailored to specific pedagogical goals, such as helping students practice course concepts, receive formative feedback, prepare for assessments, or navigate course resources.

This asynchronous experience provides practical strategies and resources for designing or redesigning courses that thoughtfully integrate in-person and online learning. You will explore inclusive and equitable teaching practices and make intentional decisions about how students engage with content, their instructor, and one another across learning environments. Most importantly, you will apply what you learn directly to one or more of your own courses.

Who can apply: All faculty members at CPP can apply.

How will applicants be selected?: Priority will be given to faculty who teach in the CourseMatch program. Up to 20 faculty members will be selected.

Time commitment: Approximately 15-20 hours

Additional Compensation: Eligible faculty members will receive additional compensation of $200 upon completion of course requirements. Funding is provided from a CSU Online Course Services grant.

This asynchronous experience provides instructors with practical strategies for applying effective accessibility practices and Universal Design for Learning in their courses. Participants will gain essential background, actionable techniques, and a deeper understanding of students’ diverse needs. By keeping these foundations in mind, instructors can help ensure their courses provide equitable access for students to learn. This is an asynchronous online course facilitated by CAFE staff. Please apply no later than 10/21

How will applicants be selected? Faculty will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Getting classes ready

If lecturers want to begin preparing courses in Canvas before they have access to CPP’s Canvas, they can do so: Go to Instructure.com and sign up for a free teacher account. Build courses there, then when ready download the course package and upload it to CPP Canvas (CAFE Canvas team can help with this).

Using Canvas

• CAFE’s self-enrollable Introduction to Teaching with Canvas: A basic introduction for faculty who are new to using Canvas. Learn to maintain a current syllabus, maintain an up-to-date gradebook, communicate with students, and provide instructional materials that are accessible to students with disabilities. Requires CPP login.
• LinkedIn Learning “Learning Canvas”: A basic introduction for faculty who are new to using Canvas. Learn how to set up a class, add assignments, grade in Canvas, communicate with students, add multimedia, and leverage Canvas for student success. Requires CPP login or a LinkedIn Learning account.
• CAFE’s Canvas support page: Video playlists, tutorials, and CAFE contact information. Does not require CPP login.
