Management and Human Resources

Internships

MHR students must complete 3 units of either MHR4410/MHR4420 Internship or MHR4610/MHR4610S Senior Project to graduate. Note that taking both is not required. If you can secure an internship job, it is recommended to enroll in the Internship class. University policy does not allow crediting previous internship experience for the internship class. MHR4410/4420 must be completed concurrently with an internship job.

Internship is a critical professional development process for our students. Employers are expected to assign a mentor for guidance, offer training, and provide regular feedback to create a positive learning experience that prepares students for their future careers.

Students have two options for the Internship course:

  1. Part-time Internship (MHR 4410): 1 or 2 units. Students must work a minimum of 18 hours per week during the semester and complete a second semester to reach 3 units, either at the same internship location or a different organization.
  2. Full-time Internship (MHR 4420): 3 units. Students must work a minimum of 36 hours per week during the semester.

Internship positions eligible for MHR internships involve core responsibilities in management, human resources, and entrepreneurship. Suitable roles include managerial or supervisory positions (e.g., assistant store manager, department manager), HR roles (e.g., HR assistant, recruiter), and business ownership roles. Please note that positions unrelated to MHR, such as sales, financial advisor, administrative assistant, or warehouse associate, are not appropriate for MHR internships.

For assistance in finding an internship, students are encouraged to contact the Career Center, search on Handshake, join student clubs such as PIHRA, CEO, and NSLS, or attend campus career fairs. External resources such as LinkedIn or Indeed are also recommended.

If you are currently working as a manager, HR professional, or business owner, you may utilize this position for the internship class. However, you must be assigned new learning responsibilities to fulfill the requirements for MHR4410/MHR4420. Please note that the internship must provide a distinct learning experience; we cannot grant credit for current job duties alone.

After securing an internship, students must submit two documents to Dr. Steve Guo at xuguangguo@cpp.edu to be approved for MHR4410/MHR4420:

  1. MHR Internship Pre-Approval Form (PDF)
  2. A signed copy of the job announcement from the supervisor. If unavailable, a detailed job description specifying duties and tasks, also signed by the supervisor, is acceptable. Here is a sample Internship/Job Description (PDF).

The MHR Department holds two informational meetings each semester regarding the Internship and Senior Project. Attendance at one of these meetings is strongly encouraged. Please check our website homepage for the meeting schedule.

If you have any questions regarding internships, please speak to Dr. Steve Guo during his office hours or email him at xuguangguo@cpp.edu.
