IGE Holds 17th Annual Projects Fair Virtually

The Interdisciplinary General Education Program’s 17th Annual Projects Fair was held virtually on Tuesday, December 1.

Each year, the graduating cohort is required to present their individual capstone projects, which represent a culmination of their studies and experiences as IGE students. This year’s graduating cohort includes: Natalie Camacho, Isaiah Hewitt, Samantha Manning, Shawn McKenzie-Heck, Aileen Paises, Rachel Reyes and Gaelen Somera.

Rachel Reyes, who spoke on behalf of her cohort, said IGE has given her confidence and increased knowledge.

“To me, IGE is a program where I can feel comfortable and confident in expressing who I am, not only within the classroom, but also within my personal life,” said Reyes. “I started here at Cal Poly as someone who was extremely shy, and never participated in classes. Just after taking one IGE class, I started feeling more comfortable in speaking up and asking questions because I realized that my peers and I were all in these classes to learn and there’s nothing wrong with expressing who you are. The IGE classroom setting is a great representation of how teachers should make their students feel, and I really want to incorporate that within my own classroom once I begin teaching.”

In addition to Reyes’s speech, remarks were also given by Dean Jeff Passe, Professor Dennis Quinn and lecturer Kenneth Stahl. At the end of the program, IGE students were presented with certificates and an IGE tassel (virtually).
