The 2024 McGoldrick Service-Learning Award recipient is Alissa Perez. Alissa is a Sociology major with an emphasis in social work who is scheduled to graduate at the end of the semester.

The McGoldrick Service-Learning Award for the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) aims to support CLASS majors completing service-learning and/or internship hours at a non-profit of their choice. Alissa has chosen to do her internship in the CLASS Student Success Center because of the impact that academic advisors have had on her own educational journey. The primary objectives of the CLASS Student Success Center internship include equipping interns with the necessary skills to effectively aid students, particularly those encountering academic obstacles.

When asked why she chose the Student Success Center as her internship, she said, “By working alongside the SSC advisors, I have gotten the chance to experience and truly learn what it means to effectively help other students.” Alissa was surprised to receive the McGoldrick Service-Learning Award and expressed, “I have already enjoyed the time I spent interning at the CLASS Student Success Center as a peer educator, and this award simply makes the time all the sweeter. As a graduating senior who is completing the last few requirements for an undergraduate degree, this award is proof that the hard work that I have put into my education does not go unnoticed. I hope to continue working in human services and/or education to help others during their time in school. Maybe one day I will become an educational advisor or guidance counselor, but I can say with absolute certainty that I am optimistic about the future ahead of me.”

Alissa’s supervisors (and CLASS Student Success Advisors), Annette Mastin and Maria Anzaldo had some encouraging words to say about Alissa in her role at the SSC.  “Alissa is acquiring valuable skills in active listening, resource linking, and working with students from diverse backgrounds. These skills will undoubtedly enhance her professional journey in the field of social work as she continues to develop and grow. Alissa has made an invaluable contribution to the internship program at the CLASS Student Success Center. As she prepares to graduate this spring, we eagerly anticipate the promising path that lies ahead of her.”

Alissa is beyond grateful for this award, and shared her gratitude as she said, “I would like to thank my supervisors at the CLASS Student Success Center for encouraging me to apply for the award and for being admirable people from whom I have learned so much. I would also like to thank my own educational advisors from Citrus College and here at Cal Poly Pomona, Lancella Hunter, for showing me that as intimidating as higher education might be, I can push through it with just the right amount of determination.”

Congratulations Alissa on this well-deserved award and best wishes in your future endeavors after graduation!
