Online MS in Computer Science Curriculum

Curriculum

The Online Master of Science in Computer Science is a 30-unit graduate program designed to build advanced technical knowledge while giving students opportunities to apply what they learn. The program draws from Cal Poly Pomona’s established graduate computer science curriculum and culminates in an applied project.

Program Structure

  • 30 total semester units.
  • Advanced graduate coursework in computer science.
  • Coursework grounded in core areas such as algorithms, machine learning and artificial intelligence, software systems and computer architecture
  • Opportunities to develop focused knowledge in applied areas of computer science.
  • Applied culminating project.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of Cal Poly Pomona’s MS in Computer Science are expected to be able to:

  • Frame and model real-world problems that can be addressed computationally, evaluate multiple approaches and select an appropriate solution.
  • Comprehend and apply advanced concepts and design principles in computer architecture.
  • Build applications, individually or in a team, that are robust, reliable and maintainable.
  • Develop breadth of advanced knowledge and skills in applied areas of computer science.
  • Use reasoning and problem solving to conduct independent work in an area of specialization.
  • Communicate and defend technical or research results effectively in written and verbal formats.

Areas Represented in Faculty Expertise

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Robotics, multi-agent systems and human-robot interaction
  • Cybersecurity, privacy and digital forensics
  • Software engineering, cloud and mobile computing
  • High-performance, parallel and distributed computing
  • Computer vision, image processing and data visualization
  • Data science, big data and data mining
  • Human-computer interaction and human-centered computing
  • Computer networks, edge computing, AIoT and connected systems
  • Computer architecture and fault-tolerant computing
  • Computing education and educational technologies

Applied Culminating Project

The project is where students bring advanced computer science knowledge together around a focused problem or technical challenge. The existing graduate program uses faculty-guided directed study and project/thesis processes; the online launch is being positioned as project-based. Final online project course numbers and process should be confirmed before publication.
