Overview 

The Summer Academy 2023 - Computer Science & 3D Game Development Program at Cal Poly Pomona is designed for middle and high school students (in 7th to 12th grades) to explore and develop knowledge and skillset that help them make professional 3D games using computer science knowledge, algorithm, and tools, as well as come up with a tremendous portfolio for college applications and personal growth, especially for those students who consider computer science or other related majors.

Students will leave the program with Certificate of Completion from College of Professional and Global Education of Cal Poly Pomona, and the enhanced academic readiness for university admissions and academic network. Students will compete in the final pitch to determine winners. Winners will be awarded with an additional certificate officially issued by the College of Professional and Global Education of Cal Poly Pomona in recognition of the Excellent Work and Great Potential that the student performs and demonstrates. 

Unless regulated by new policies on COVID-19, the instruction mode will be 100% in-person. Students will come in person and take the program at the College of Professional and Global Education of Cal Poly Pomona. 

Dates, Fees and Extended Hours 

  • Dates: June 5 to June 16, 2023 (no classes on weekends)
  • Time: 9:30am to 11:30am in the mornings; and 1:30pm to 3:30pm in the afternoons on weekdays (40 hours in total)
  • Extended-Hour Policy: 8:00am to 9:30am in the mornings; and 3:30pm to 5:15pm in the afternoons. In the extended hours, Cal Poly Pomona program staff will tutor the students on the program assignments, and lead activities or campus visits, etc.
  • Lunch: Free lunch will be provided at Cal Poly Pomona restaurant. Students are also allowed to bring their own lunch
  • Program Fees:
    • Early Bird Fee: $1,390/student (for applications on or before April 18, 2023)
    • Regular Fee: $1,590/student (for applications after April 18, 2023)
  • Application Deadline: May 5, 2023

Program Information

Computer Science & 3D Game Development Program

  • Computer science knowledge, skills and tools used to design & build your own 3D games 
  • Game programming and development incorporating computer science concepts and algorithm
  • C# programming tutoring from entry to advance levels
  • Understanding of augmented reality and virtual reality and their applications
  • Competition in the final pitch at the end of the program to determine winners who will get recognized and awarded
  • Students will need to bring their own laptop (Unity install instructions will be provided later), a sweater/hoody/jacket (keep in mind the A/C in classrooms), and refillable water bottle. Cell phones need to be muted and not used during classes

Program Module

  • Module One (10 hours): Understanding Unity3D and basic development skills incorporating computer science concepts and algorithm
  • Module Two (10 hours): Advanced level of skills in game development with hands-on applications and 3D animation basics
  • Module Three (10 hours): C# programming and creation of game algorithm and models
  • Module Four (10 hours): AR  and VR application development skills and final project outcome

Exchange session with parents will be facilitated to focus on university application, academic paths, and career development, etc. with Cal Poly Pomona faculty and staff.
