About Me

Dr. Abhishek Tiwari is a Lecturer in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He typically teaches courses on Globalization, Infrastructure, Research Methods as well as introductory courses in Urban Planning and associated labs. Dr. Tiwari’s published research includes papers, professional reports and book contributions on housing policy (NIMBYism, Housing Prices); poverty (food security and poverty); community-based governance structures (neighborhood councils); and public health (low birth weight, sustaining community involvement in health improvement).

Dr. Tiwari also works professionally as a structural engineer specializing in the seismic installation of non-standard structures (industrial cold rooms, heavy equipment, laboratory casework and carriers). Dr. Tiwari has also served as a public heath consultant for various community-based organizations and foundations focusing on the development and deployment of evaluation tools.

In addition to his academic and professional activities, Dr. Tiwari is the treasurer for his local Kiwanis chapter and is on the Board of his City’s Education Foundation. Both organizations are focused on providing youth specific services and funding. Their activities include providing several scholarships to local area youth, providing school supplies to the local school district and lower-income families, and funding outreach and counseling for at-risk youth in the local school district.

In 2017, Dr. Tiwari was the featured speaker for Cal Poly’s annual “Last Lecture” series. He also received a Faculty Research Mentor award from the Department of Undergraduate research in 2018 for supporting a student who was awarded a McNair Scholarship.

Dr. Tiwari received his BA’s in History and Sociology from UCLA, a Masters in Public Health from UCLA, a Masters in Demography from UC Irvine, a Masters in Civil Engineering from CSU Fullerton and a PhD in Urban Planning from UC Irvine.
