B2D Calendar of Activities

TIMELINE AND ACTIVITIES FOR EACH TWO-YEAR B2D COHORT

First Summer 

Weeks 1 & 2 9AM-5PM

  • Monday-Thurs: Molecular Biology Techniques workshops
  • Friday: Professional Skills Workshops (2 hours per workshop)
  • Begin work on Individual Development Plan (IDP)

Week 3 9AM-5PM

  • Monday-Friday: Professional Skills Workshops (2 hours per workshop)

Academic Year 1 (end of August through mid-May)


Fall, & Spring Semesters

  • CPP MS research projects and academic coursework
  • Introduce CPP STEM undergraduates to benefits of B2D experience through peer mentoring, seminars and selected workshops
  • Continue work on IDP

Fall Semester
  • Wednesdays 5:30PM-7PM (2 unit-CPP BIO 6800 B2D workshop – Dr. Nancy Buckley): PhD Application Workshop; Fridays 12PM-1:30PM (2 unit-CPP BIO-6800 B2D seminars & Journal Club – Dr. Wei-Jen Lin): Guest Speaker Seminars (3X/Semester), Journal Club (1.5h/session, 3X/Semester) and Grant Writing (2h/session, 3X/Semester)

Spring Semester

  • Wednesdays 5:30PM-7PM (2 unit-CPP BIO 5990 B2D workshops – Dr. Nancy Buckley): Manuscript Writing Workshop; Fridays 12PM-1:30PM (2 unit-CPP BIO-5990 B2D seminars & Journal Club – Dr. Wei-Jen Lin): Guest Speaker Seminars (3X/Semester), Journal Club (1.5h/session, 3X/Semester) and Grant Writing (2h/session, 3X/Semester), URM Graduate campus coordinator visits (1.5h/session, 2X/Semester); Present research at CPP & UCR student research symposium 

Second Summer (end of May through beginning of August-10 weeks)


40h/week

  • Execute research project in laboratory of UCR FRM; Give oral research presentation at UCR and CPP summer symposia; Continue work on IDP

Academic Year 2 (end of August through mid-May)


Fall & Spring Semesters

  • CPP MS research projects and academic coursework

Fall Semester

  • Complete and submit PhD applications
  • UCR predoctoral graduate course enrollment
  • Fridays 12PM-1:30PM (2 unit-CPP BIO 6800 B2D seminars & Journal Club – Dr. Wei-Jen Lin): Guest Speaker Seminars (3X/Semester), Journal Club (1.5h/session, 3X/Semester) and Grant Writing (2h/session, 3X/Semester)
  • Continue work on IDP

Spring Semester

  • Present research at STEM local, state and/or national meetings
  • Begin to write MS thesis
  • Complete IDP

Third Summer (end of May through beginning of August-10 weeks)


20h/week

  • Finish last experiments for MS project
  • Complete writing MS thesis, give oral Defense of MS Thesis, make final corrections on MS thesis and submit thesis to CPP Graduate Office
