Discovery Farm Donates Pumpkins to Buena Park School

Cal Poly Pomona Discovery Farm and TreeSap Farms Inc. partnered with the Buena Park High School for their pumpkin and plant-themed “Make and Take” class.

Discovery Farm donated 50 Cal Poly Pomona-grown pumpkins for the Oct. 20 class, while TreeSap Farms contributed flats of various succulents.

The Make and Take class is part of the high school’s floral pathway and is open to the public. It’s a way for the agricultural program to engage the community by having students work one on one with them to make a floral arrangement.

“Our students love the opportunity to show off their skills with the members of our community, and the community loves getting to make arrangements and take them to enjoy in their own homes,” said Jessica Fernandes, who teaches the class.

In the October Make and Take class, the student and their partners used the donated succulents and decorated the pumpkins with them.

“We’re happy that we could partner with Buena Park High School with their Make and Take class,” said Craig Walters, director of Discovery Farm and the Cal Poly Pomona Pumpkin Festival. “We’re especially gratified that we could help an agriculture-related course.”

Discovery Farm and the Pumpkin Festival are programs at AGRIscapes, which is the outreach center for the Huntley College of Agriculture. Each year AGRIscapes hosts thousands of school children on field trips to our Children’s Garden and Petting Farm along with tours of the center.

“Our goal at AGRIscapes is to teach people – especially children – about where their food comes from and how it is grown,” Walters said. “Agriculture deals with science and technology, and we hope we pique their interest into coming to the Huntley College of Agriculture.”
