Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Goes Virtual for 2020

June 24, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Internal Revenue Service delaying the filing deadline until July 16, Cal Poly Pomona’s long-standing Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will continue providing free preparation for qualifying households with one major change for 2020: Virtual VITA.

In partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, specially trained accounting students with the College of Business Administration will offer the complimentary service to qualifying households with an income less than $55,000 through an encrypted chat session while adhering to social distancing guidelines present during the 2020 tax season.

Dating back to the 1970s, CPP has been offering weekend VITA clinics as a service to the surrounding communities. This year’s cancellation of all in-person clinics accompanied by the move to virtualization allows for a new level of scheduling flexibility as students nearing graduation begin their accounting careers early.
