Cal Poly Pomona’s Communication Department serves more than 600 students across four options in Interpersonal Communication, Multimedia Journalism, Organizational Communication, and Public Relations. Graduates of the program earn a Bachelor of Science degree and can pursue a variety of careers in mass media, working for newspapers, magazines, radio, television, or public relations agencies, as well as careers in business, government, and education.
The Communication Department prepares students for these fields by offering a challenging and hands-on curriculum. Students gain practical experience through classes like Newspaper Practices, where students work as reporters and editors for the student newspaper The Poly Post; Event Planning, where students plan and execute the Communication Department’s annual COM Day and Alumni Night; and Communication Research, where student produce original research papers like those they would complete in graduate school. In the Communication Department, students also learn about different dynamics in communication through classes like Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication, and Group Communication.
The Communication Department’s internship program further emphasizes practical application from student’s coursework, while also giving students a head start on their professional careers. Graduates have landed positions and internships at CBS' 60 Minutes, CNN, ESPN, ABC7, LA Magazine, The Orange County Register, KCET/PBS SoCal, the American Cancer Society, Street League Skateboarding, Bank of America, Cal Poly Public Affairs, Cal Poly Athletics, Cal Poly Special Events, Yahoo, Sacks/ Westin Bonaventure Hotel, Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures, Sony, Warner Brothers, Telemundo 52, Los Angeles Kings, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, LAX, Dick Clark Productions, CBS Radio, and the Los Angeles Mayor's Office. Others have also gone on to graduate programs and law school.
