Spanish Teaching Credential

Our B.A. grants subject matter competence

To become a credentialed teacher of high school Spanish, students must complete a Single Subject Teacher Preparation Program (i.e. Teaching Credential program) after graduating. Most of these programs, offered through university schools of education such as the College of Education at Cal Poly Pomona, can be completed in approximately one and a half years of study beyond the B.A.

To get your Single Subject Credential (for high school level teaching), you need to demonstrate subject matter competence in Spanish. Our major is certified by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and grants automatic subject matter competence. This means that if you are interested in getting a Teaching Credential either immediately after graduation, or keeping that option open for later, you will not have to take the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET).

If this is an option that interests you, please become familiar with all the requirements, as you may have to plan well in advance.

Applying to the teaching credential program

Admission is a two-step process: university admission and program admission. Please visit the following sites to learn about the requirements and how to apply:

In addition, every year there is at least one information session about the Spanish teaching credential program. Make sure you attend before your senior year, so that you have time to prepare.

At least three weeks before the application deadline, contact the Spanish Single Subject Advisor, Dr. Llombart, to obtain these two documents you will need to include in your application to the Credential Program:

  1. Student plan
  2. Subject Matter Verification (this is a waiver of the CSET requirement, for students in the Spanish B.A. program)
