Independent Study Research

What is an independent study? In an independent study, you essentially develop a topic of your choice, working in concert with a faculty member who will guide you in your research. This one-on-one study opportunity will allow you to examine the research steps of a focused one-semester project. To receive course credits for your research project, you will complete a study contract with a faculty mentor who is available and has knowledge of your topic to effectively guide you in the research process.

What are the benefits? An independent study can be a great way to strengthen your college application, prepare you for future jobs, or advance your personal interest in research and your selected topic. Also, if the department does not offer the course you like, but you still need a course, you can explore the independent study option and count the credit(s) for an unrestricted major elective.

Independent study research step by step:
  1. Communicate interest in an independent study to a prospective faculty advisor the semester before the start of the independent study.
  2. Complete with your faculty advisor a semester learning contract
  3. Submit a copy of the completed and signed contract to the sociology department main office.
  4. Depending on your major and topic of interest, register for SOC4000 or CRM4000
  5. Arrange a meeting with your faculty advisor during the first week of the semester for which you registered.

Previous Independent Study Projects: The list below provides information on independent study projects students have explored in the past. After you complete your independent study, you also have the option to submit your final research paper to be presented at a conference or to CPP Bronco Scholar for publication.
