Interior architecture is a visual, collaborative discipline. That can make one question especially important for someone considering an online graduate program:
How does studio-based design education work online?
Cal Poly Pomona's Online Master of Interior Architecture combines online delivery with live studio critiques, cohort collaboration, and a capstone jury. The program is designed for both working designers seeking an advanced credential and professionals making a deliberate transition into design.
An online program built around studio learning
The MIA is a 42-unit program structured as a sequenced studio curriculum.
Students progress through foundation, technical mastery, advanced studio, and capstone work. Coursework is delivered online, with live evening critique sessions providing opportunities for students to present, discuss, and develop their work.
That distinction matters in a design discipline.
Online does not mean removing critique or collaboration from the educational experience. The studio process remains part of how students develop their design thinking and portfolio.
Learning more than how a space looks
Interior architecture extends beyond aesthetics. CPP's curriculum includes design research and theory, space planning and programming, and building systems and codes.
Students examine how people move through and experience spaces across settings such as health care, workplaces, hospitality, and civic environments. Technical study includes life safety, ADA accessibility, egress, mechanical coordination, and structural integration.
The result is a curriculum connecting creative design with the technical considerations involved in shaping the built environment.
Two paths into the same program
CPP designed the MIA for two types of students. Some are already working in interior design, architecture, or related fields and want to advance their professional education.
Others are coming from outside traditional design careers but have developed an interest in space, environment, and the built world.
Both groups complete the same program and meet the same portfolio standards. For someone considering graduate design education but needing the flexibility of online study, the question therefore may not be whether interior architecture can be studied online.
A better question may be whether the program's studio structure, curriculum, and professional direction fit the kind of designer you want to become.
