What is Upward Bound | Upward Bound Math Science?

Upward Bound programs are federally funded grants from the U.S. Department of Education and administered by California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). These programs equip high school students with the necessary skills for success in postsecondary education, particularly in STEM fields for our Math Science Scholars.

Our programs offer comprehensive college preparation and academic support free of charge to eligible high school students demonstrating potential for college success. Eligible participants come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, or are potential first-generation college students, or are at high risk of academic underachievement.

A total of 445 students currently participate in our year-round program, selected from target high school sites: Chaffey HS, Chino HS, Don Antonio Lugo HS, Fremont Academy, Ganesha HS, Garey HS, Montclair HS, Ontario HS, Pomona HS, and Village Academy. Students remain engaged in the program until their high school graduation. Upon admission to a postsecondary institution, Upward Bound connects students with additional support services to ensure their retention and success in college. We track all students for up to six years after high school graduation or until they complete a postsecondary education degree program.

Program History

Established in 1995 (Classic Programs) and 1998 (Math Science Programs), Upward Bound Progams are an integral part of Cal Poly Pomona's Pre-College TRIO Programs and their commitment to educational advancement and equity.
