Degree Programs

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Cal Poly Pomona confers two graduate degrees:

Our program is suitable for individuals interested in theoretical mathematics, applications of mathematics or statistics, working in industry, or teaching at the secondary or post-secondary level. Basic Degree Requirements

Regardless of the chosen degree program, graduate students must complete 30 credit units as described in the university catalog:

In all cases, students have the choice of either completing a thesis (26 units for coursework and 4 units for thesis preparation) or two comprehensive exams (28 units for coursework and 2 units for comprehensive exams preparation).

Specific Restrictions and Procedures

  • At least 30 unit are required for a master's degree (per University Policy).
  • At least 18 units must be at the 5000- or 6000-level or higher (per University Policy).
  • At most 12 units at the 4000-level may count towards a master’s degree.
  • Most 4000-level MAT and STA courses count towards a master's degree as electives.
  • At most 2 total units of MAE 5000, MAT 5000, and STA 5000 may count towards a master’s degree.
  • At most 6 total units of MAE 5990, MAT 4990, MAT 5990, STA 4990, and STA 5990 may count towards a master’s degree.
  • MAT 4000, MAT 4170, and STA 4000 may not count towards a master’s degree.
  • STA 5900 may be taken twice with at most a total of 4 units counting towards a master’s degree.

Graduate Contracts / Programs of Study

A Graduate Contract / Program of Study is required for students who entered the master's program in Fall 2022 or earlier.  Please contact the Graduate Coordinator for assistance.

Requirements of the Graduate Studies Office

The Graduate Studies Office has its own set of policies and procedures each graduate student must satisfy in order to earn a master's degree.
