Communication Access Accommodations

DRC’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services group facilitates various accommodations to provide equal communication access for students. DHH services include: Realtime Captioning, Sign Language Interpreting, or use of an Assistive Listening Device. All services are provided on a request-only basis for DRC students.

Realtime captioning is a method of providing immediate, verbatim translation of spoken English into text using a steno machine and specialized software. The text is displayed on the student’s personal electronic device for the student to follow in real time. DRC captioning services are provided by qualified professional realtime captioners.

Sign language interpreting is a method of providing immediate interpretation of spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL). Interpreting services are provided by qualified professional ASL interpreters.

Assistive Listening Devices (ALD) are used to amplify sound and provide students with improved access in the classroom. The speaker will wear a microphone attached to a transmitter and sound is amplified by a wireless receiver attached to headphones or hearing aids worn by the student.
