It’s every year that the Kellogg West Auditorium fills up with students, faculty and staff who await to hear advice, tips, and stories from a hospitality industry professional at the Richard Frank Distinguished Lectureship, hosted by The Collins College of Hospitality Management. This year was no different. The featured speaker was the great Gregg Patterson, longtime adjunct lecturer for The Collins College and recently retired general manager of The Beach Club.

Patterson’s career is as dynamic and diverse as his personality. Not only did he manage The Beach Club for over three decades, he’s now a full time speaker and writer for his new company, “Tribal Magic!!!” He’s been a featured presenter at various club management seminars, assistant manager conferences and hospitality forums around the world.

Patterson even teaches club management courses at BMI-II and BMI-V; was an adjunct professor for fourteen years; and is a visiting lecturer at various universities both in the states and around the world. If that wasn't’t extensive enough, the hospitality veteran boasts a wide range of writing from Board Room magazine, Club Management magazine, Golf Retailing magazine and more.

Patterson talked about his 50 year journey from no career and no direction as an undergraduate history major to an enthusiastic passionate and committed hospitality vet. He reflected on the ups and downs, and ins and outs of his journey from his innocent then, to his experienced now. He shared his personal and professional life lessons he’s learned and about the wisdom he found embedded in every experience he’s encountered.

“You must have tactics to enlarge and enrich your journey,” said Patterson. “Make the ordinary profound and the routine memorable.”

Throughout his charismatic speech, Patterson discussed topics ranging from his background, to the importance of building relationships. His hour and a half lecture engaged students and called on them to evaluate their friendships, habits and goals in order to live a more fulfilling life.

To conclude the afternoon, Patterson answered questions from the audience, all the while, Associate Dean Michael Godfrey presented the hospitality veteran an award of appreciation.
