Civil Engineering

Professional Examination Review Courses

Having appropriate professional licenses is an essential part of being a practicing civil engineer. Thus, Cal Poly Pomona offers review courses to help prepare for the various examinations. These review courses are intended for people who have already completed the needed college coursework and desire an organized review of this material.

These examinations are administered by the California Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam (formerly known as the Engineer in Training or EIT exam) is the first step toward becoming professionally licensed. Civil engineering students are ready to take the FE examination once they have completed the following courses:

  • Mathematics: Calculus through differential equations; statistics
  • Science: Physics and Chemistry
  • Engineering: All required 1000, 2000, and 3000-level engineering courses

We encourage all civil engineering students to take the FE exam before graduation. It is usually more difficult to pass the exam after graduation.

Professional Civil Engineer (PE) Exam

Cal Poly Pomona also offers a review course for the professional civil engineers (PE) examination. This course is typically offered twice each year, immediately before the October and April exams. The review course is organized by Cal Poly Pomona faculty, and most of the instructors are Cal Poly Pomona faculty. The schedule is provided here.
