Learning Labs

The Learning Labs service is a virtual environment that provides student participants a persistent virtual lab computer or "sandbox" for computational learning.  The Learning Labs environment is available for the 2023-24 academic year.  Faculty are encouraged to contact the IT Service Desk and/or their department if they believe the Learning Lab environment may be helpful for their students and coursework.

The Learning Labs environment is similar to the campus Virtual Software Lab service in that Learning Labs provides students access to a virtual computer via a browser.  However, the Learning Labs environment differs from the Virtual Software Lab service in that Learning Labs provisions and assigns a persistent virtual computer(s) per student.  Learning Labs students also have the ability to reset their virtual computers as needed.  The Learning Labs environment is faculty sponsored and only provisioned for specific courses and projects.

ONLY students who have been contacted by their professor and provisioned for Learning Labs resources have access to the environment.  Please refer to the following information concerning the Learning Labs environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Learning Labs environment is a persistent virtual environment available for the 2023-24 academic year and is coordinated by the IT Division with specific faculty members.  The Learning Labs program is limited to a small number of courses and student participants.  Faculty are encouraged to contact the IT Service Desk and/or their department if they believe the Learning Lab environment may be helpful for their students and coursework.

ONLY students who have been contacted by their professor and provisioned for Learning Labs resources have access to the environment.  Please refer to the following information concerning the Learning Labs environment.

The computing and networking requirements for the Learning Labs environment are the same for the campus Virtual Software Lab.  Please refer to the FAQ section within the Virtual Software Lab webpage for further detail.

The Learning Labs environment is provisioned for participative students enrolled in a specific course or project.  Therefore, the applications installed within the Learning Labs virtual computer will be based on the request and direction of the faculty member for each course.

The Learning Labs environment is an assigned, persistent environment.  Meaning, a virtual computer is assigned to a specific student.  Unless the student chooses to reset their virtual computer, the assigned computer will retain all work and data within that persistent virtual computer for the duration of the course term.

A student's Learning Labs virtual computer will also remain online and running, as long as the virtual computer has active CPU activity.  For example, a long-running computational application will continue to run, even if the student disconnects from the Learning Lab browser window, as long as that application task maintains CPU activity.  Once CPU activity returns to normal CPU idle levels, the virtual computer will automatically power off after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Students with access to the Learning Labs environment will lose access to the environment at the end of the semester.  Please contact your professor if you have any questions or specific requests requiring Learning Labs access beyond the course term.

The Learning Labs are configured based on the application requirements and performance expectations.

Your Learning Lab virtual computer will automatically be shutdown when ALL the following conditions are met.

  1. You have disconnected from the Learning Labs environment (whether you explicitly closed your browser or the computer has had 15 minutes of no keyboard/mouse activity)

    AND

  2. Your Learning Labs virtual computer has been powered on for at least 15 minutes

    AND

  3. Your Learning Labs virtual computer's CPU Idle level has been greater than 95% for at least 15 minutes (meaning, the virtual computer is not processing anything)

IT strongly recommends students copy off or backup any data they need to retain from the virtual computer to another location (such as OneDrive).  The Learning Labs virtual computer is persistent and assigned to the specific student.  Therefore, unless the student chooses to reset their virtual computer, the computer will retain all work and data within that computer for the duration for the course.  At the end of the semester, the virtual computer and the associated data will be removed and lost.

The Learning Labs environment is a multi-level solution.  Students will initially log into the Learning Labs dashboard via https://elum.in/cpp-learning-lab.  Once logged into the Learning Labs dashboard, students will start their virtual computer from their course selection menu.  Students will be prompted for a username and password to connect to the virtual computer.  The IT Division and/or the professor will provide students the username and password to access their virtual computer.

It is recommended students "Shut down" their virtual computer and "End Session" within their Learning Labs dashboard when you are finished using the Learning Labs.

NOTE: If you need the virtual computer to continue running an application process, you may disconnect or close the virtual computer window as well as close your Learning Labs dashboard browser window.

You do NOT need to connect to the VPN to use the Learning Labs.  You may access the Learning Labs with your Internet connection.

Yes.  Text-To-Speech technology can be used in the Learning Labs.  There are two assistive technology programs installed in the Learning Labs - Kurzweil and NVDA.  You will use your own assistive technology on your personal device to navigate to the Learning Labs environment.  Once you are logged into the Learning Labs virtual computer, the installed assistive technology on the Learning Labs will need to be turned on and used.

Kurzweil 3000 is installed on the Learning Labs.  Click on the Kurzweil application icon to activate the application.  For more information about Kurzweil 3000, please visit https://www.cpp.edu/drc/other-drc-services/Kurzweil-300.shtml.

NVDA or Non-Visual Display Access is a screen reader installed on the Learning Labs.  Using the Learning Labs Windows OS start and search menu, click NVDA to activate the application.  For keyboard-only users, use the Windows + Tab keys to return to the host computer from the virtual environment.  If NVDA or screen navigation controls do not function appropriately, you may alternatively use on-campus computer labs stations or download and install the software applications to your own computer.
